Lincoln Heights increases recycling by 453%

Thanks to a new curbside recycling program, Lincoln Heights residents recycled 17.63 tons in the first six months of 2017. This is a 453 percent increase in tons recycled over the same period in 2016.

Under the leadership of Council Member Linda Childs-Jeter, the village is working with Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste to improve recycling participation and decrease waste. Linda is a WeTHRIVE! Ambassador and member of the Lincoln Heights WeTHRIVE! Team.

Council member Linda Childs-Jeter leads Lincoln Heights Recycles.

“Lincoln Heights has established a strong recycling infrastructure in their community with curbside recycling,” said Michelle Balz, Assistant Solid Waste Manager with Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste. “The District is excited to work with Lincoln Heights Village Council, the village administration, and community volunteers to continue to increase participation.”

Linda has recruited a “Lincoln Heights Recycles” team that will go out into the community to encourage and educate residents about what items are recyclable and why it’s important. “We’ll also have programs at Lincoln Heights Elementary School and St. Monica’s Recreation Center,” she said.

While recycling is good for the environment, there are economic advantages as well. “There is a direct benefit to the community through incentive dollars,” said Rebecca Hopkins, village manager of Lincoln Heights. Hamilton County Recycling runs the Residential Recycling Incentive (RRI) program, which provides grant funds to communities as an incentive to increase recycling.

The community is catching on fast. “Some people are already requesting larger recycling bins,” Linda said.
