It’s Day 2 of Champions Week! Today we’re honoring Gwen Chesser of Golf Manor as the 2023 WeTHRIVE!℠ Champion for Service to the Community.
Gwen was an example of quiet leadership for the Village of Golf Manor in 2023. Never one to be flashy or demand the spotlight, Gwen is described as dependable. As a member of the Golf Manor WeTHRIVE! team, she works consistently to promote a culture of health, safety, and vitality in her community.
Gwen is always one of the first to show up for events and she never seeks praise or gratitude from others for her work. The person who nominated Gwen for this award says that she represents the best of what WeTHRIVE! can be in a community – where residents can come together to build a healthier neighborhood for all – and deserves to be recognized for all her contributions, even if she’s not in it for the glory.

In 2023, Gwen volunteered many hours to promote the WeTHRIVE! initiative, participating in monthly planning meetings and participating in WeTHRIVE! events, including Ohio State University Extension cooking classes, the summer yoga series, and planting flowers around the Village’s welcome signs.
She also volunteered on multiple occasions to attend events in Volunteer Park where she talked to other residents about joining the WeTHRIVE! movement. Gwen participates in these events without question, even if it means showing up by herself for the duration.
Gwen is not only an active member of the WeTHRIVE! team, but she also makes sure to bring family and friends in on the action. When she is first to show up for a meeting, she’ll be on the phone calling her sister Phyllis or neighbor Diane to make sure they join her for the evening. In bringing her granddaughter along to different events and making sure to include others, Gwen is a great example of how to implement healthy behaviors and engage in community connection.
Gwen embodies what it means to be a WeTHRIVE! champion.
