How Montgomery THRIVES!:
  • A Committed Village Council: In December 2014, the Montgomery City Council adopted the WeTHRIVE! Overall, Chronic Disease and Emergency Preparedness Resolution.
  • WeTHRIVE! Team Members: Ja'Net Crawford, Connie Gaylor, Lynda Roesch (council), Matthew Vanderhorst and Tom Wolf.
  • Selected Pathway(s): Chronic Disease and Emergency Preparedness
Accomplishments:
  • Chair Yoga Supports Aging in Place: As part of the WeTHRIVE! Initiative, the City of Montgomery made a commitment to deliver programming that helps ensure that their older population is able to age in place. Part of this commitment was the implementation of a Chair Yoga class. Yoga is a practice that can be modified to support anyone at any stage of life. Chair Yoga is intended to make yoga accessible to participants with arthritis, injuries, or other movement limitations and challenges. Each participant has a chair to assist with balance for some simple standing poses. Participants also do many postures seated in the chair and spend plenty of time on breath work and guided relaxation. “This class has allowed our older adult population an opportunity to improve their movement, strength, and flexibility all of which help them to feel more comfortable with aging in place” said Sarah Fink, Recreation Specialist for the City of Montgomery. Classes are taught by Registered Yoga Teachers Wendy Andersen and Lisa Walsh.
  • Community Awareness: The City of Montgomery added a WeTHRIVE! page to its website to build community awareness of the initiative. The webpage includes information on the Chronic Disease and Emergency Preparedness Pathways, action plan activities, and educational resources.
