Addyston working to make the healthy choice the easy choice

Occasionally, out of all the meetings, seminars and training sessions, you find a gem. You find something that really works for your community. For Addyston, this gem is WeTHRIVE! Through the WeTHRIVE! Community Wellness Mini-Grant, Addyston is making it easier for our residents to keep moving, get in shape, and make healthy choices.

Keep Moving. Walk & Roll Addyston is a series of loops that take full advantage of our great sidewalk system. The five loops, collectively covering about 12 miles, are clearly marked with direction and distances in 0.5 mile increments. They are dotted with seven benches and trash receptacles for those needing to rest along the way. All routes are ADA accessible.

Get in Shape. You’ll now find outdoor exercise equipment next to the Municipal Building. It is great to see both kids and adults working out there. With a new bike rack, cyclists passing through our community can enjoy the equipment as well.

Make Healthy Choices. With the nearest grocery store four miles away, we needed to find a way to help our elderly and others who cannot drive get to a store that sells healthy foods, like fresh produce. We formed a shared use agreement with the Addyston Baptist Church, which now provides weekly van transportation to the supermarket. We also worked with Jeff’s Drive Thru, who is letting us use their space for a Farmers’ Market.

In Addyston, we are determined to continue to work to make our community a healthier, thus a better place to live. We urge all to join the WeTHRIVE! movement and do the same for the communities where you live.

Thanks to the staff at WeTHRIVE! for their patient guidance, gentle pushes and tugs to start our community on a path to better health. Thanks to the Council of the Village of Addyston for their support of this effort. Thanks to the great WeTHRIVE! team here in Addyston. What a great group! Because of all of the above, in Addyston, WeTHRIVE!
