HBO's Weight of the Nation series debuts in Hamilton County with screening of Children in Crisis

On Wednesday, May 9, WeTHRIVE! presents the local premiere of HBO’s The Weight of the Nation documentary series, from 7:00pm until 9:00pm at the 20th Century Theatre, 3021 Madison Road, Cincinnati, 45209.

We will screen Children in Crisis, which tells the heart-wrenching stories of young people struggling with excess weight and facing serious medical complications at an early age, and takes a hard look at the marketing practices of the food and beverage industry, which often undermine efforts of parents and others committed to keeping children healthy.

Nearly one-third of Hamilton County’s third graders are overweight or obese. The fact that they may be the first generation in our history to have a shorter lifespan than their parents is alarming. Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), makes a good point when he states: “If you were told your child is at risk for cancer, that would get your attention. If you were told your child is at risk for some sort of brain disease, that would get your attention. Well, obesity ought to be on that list.”

Please join us Wednesday evening! The film and discussion that follows will provide us with a candid view of the issue, insight into what is being done locally, and a call to action to ensure our children’s future. Afterwards, we invite you to share your reactions by posting on our Facebook page or leaving a comment below.

While obesity is a serious issue, we are making this a fun event for everyone, with gift bags, prizes and healthy food. Download free passes here.
